Special theme this year: GLUTTONY - Food can be seen as one of the soft power aspects dividing the poor from the rich. Historically, meat - especially fat - has always been associated with gluttony and often used as a visual representation of indulgence and excess. Over the last 60 years annual meat consumption per capita has increased by approximately 2.5 times, clearly demonstrating that gluttony is no longer confined to the rich. Main themes: ENVIRONMENT - Livestock farming is a major contributor to biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. It is also responsible for approximately 12–18% of global human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for about 32% of anthropogenic methane emissions worldwide. EMPATHY - Consumer society has lost connection to farm animals as it has become completely detached from the source of the plastic-wrapped food in supermarkets. At the same time, by producing way less animal products animal welfare standards could be regulated stricter. HEALTH - Regular meat consumption is associated with a range of diseases as well as cattle farming is the main source of zoonotic disease emergence and growing antimicrobial resistance.
